Joan was born in Kentucky, potty-trained in West Africa, and grew up in Northern California, where the hippies got a hold of her. After that, it was all over.
She got educated at Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design, then returned briefly to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she was a founding member of the legendary Girljock Magazine. She also contributed to Wimmin's Comix, Gay Comix, Oh... and Real Girl.
She also drew a full-page feature, "Last Call", for The Advocate.
Joan's lived in New York City since 1992, and her work has appeared in the Village Voice (where she was the first scab to replace Jules Feiffer), Ms. Magazine, Women's Review of Books, On the Issues Magazine, Sportsdykes, and Juicy Mother, among others.

Joan is the creator of the comic strip Bitter Girl. Read all about it here.
She is also an editor at DC Comics. But don't send her your submission for the best Batman story ever. She's had her day job surgically separated from her moonlighting. Seriously -- she won't know what you're talking about.
